Overview

What's the project?

To create a concept of an immersive space to scale with a strong narrative arc. The journey of a letter takes users through an immersive narrative space of how letters and postman played a vital role in peoples lives.

How did we create it?

After brainstorming, we chose the Indian post office concept, designed the layout, built a scaled model, and created assets like stamp stickers and AR filters, along with a temporary postal service.

Topic Selection

Brainstorming

We ideated on a list of spaces and voted on which one to go for. We narrowed it down to the post office.

Post Office

We chose the post office because it was once essential in Indian society and is now fading. It carries many stories and memories. We wanted to encourage people share letters, create memories and add a personal touch.

Ideating

We used the Lotus Blossom method to generate ideas for the space. By identifying keywords related to the Indian post office, we developed a narrative experience, layout, and interaction points.

Building the Model

Drawing the plan

We planned the layout of the space around the three narratives and a creation zone, focusing on crowd management. After several iterations, we decided a natural flow pattern to guide visitors intuitively. We mapped out the interaction points and space needed for each area.

Developing the story arcs

We wanted to show how important postmen and the postal system were in Indian lives. So, we created a virtual postman to guide visitors and researched stamps to create three stories that express these ideas.

Building the model

To visualize the model, we built a 3D version. We then mapped it out on sunboard. For the postbox domes, we created moulds and vacuum-foamed them and began assembling the structure to scale.

Adding the visuals

We created visuals for the walls, installation and the postman guide. We chose visuals that best told the three stories and used a color palette that matched the Indian postal system.

The Model

The Experience - Before

Before entering the space, visitors get stamped like a letter (their tickets). Then, they enter through a postbox-like entrance and meet Gopi the postman, who has letters to deliver, and visitors will accompany him.

The Experience - During

As Gopi guides visitors, they enter a space with screens on the walls and holographic stamp doors. As they pass through the doors, the story begins, with Gopi as the guide. The same happens for the other two stories, with environmental changes that match the narrative and engage different senses.

The Experience - After

After experiencing all three stories, visitors enter a space where Gopi invites them to send a letter. Here, they can create personalized postcards and stamps (which have flavor when licked). A stamp wall displays designs from India’s postal history. When they exit, there are postboxes to mail their letters.

Live Display

We had a live display of our model in front of peers and faculty. To give people a flavor of our concept we created interactions to make it more engaging.

Interaction 1: Postal Service

In our concept model, at the end of the experience, visitors could post their letters. So we created letter templates and offered a temporary postal service around the college.

Interaction 2: AR Stamps

To seal the letter, we provided stamp stickers with QR codes. Scanning the code opens a filter where people can take pictures and create their own stamps.
